Faculty Profile
The establishment of the Faculty of Sharia and Law (formerly the Faculty of Sharia) stemmed from the desire of Indonesian Muslims to have an Islamic higher education since colonial times. To realize it, in April 1945 a meeting was held between the leaders of various Islamic organizations, scholars and intellectuals. The meeting resulted in the formation of the Planning Committee for Islamic Higher Education chaired by Drs. Moh. Hatta.
In accordance with the government regulations No. 34 in 1950, State Islamic Higher Education (PTAIN) in its first establishment consisted of three departments, i.e. Departments of Qodlo, Tarbiyah, and Dakwah, which lasted up to nine years. The PTAIN was then merged with the Government’s Academy of Religious Sciences (ADIA) under the Ministry of Religious Affairs which was established in Jakarta. Under the Decree of the Minister of Religious Affairs No. 43/1960 reinforced by the Presidential Decree No. 11/1960, it became into State Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIN) Jami’ah al-Islamiyah al-Hukumiyah. The decree stated that IAIN should have four faculties, including the Faculty of Sharia and the Faculty of Ushuluddin in Yogyakarta, and the Faculty of Tarbiyah and the Faculty of Adab in Jakarta. The Faculty of Sharia was in fact an enlargement of the Department of Qadla (Islamic Courts), which in its later development turned into the current Faculty of Sharia and Law UIN Sunan Kalijaga.
